A Caganer is a Catalan Christmas “tradition” where the pooper is hidden in the Nativity scene for kids to find. Yes, the “Elf on a Shelf” is a copycat of a much weirder tradition that dates back a few hundred years.
Catalonia is the northeast section of Spain that borders France, and is home to the popular tourist city of Barcelona. Catalonians are different than the rest of Europe, with unique traditions and different customs.
One of those is the Caganer figure — the actual translation is “the defecator.” This is totally real: [Wikipedia]. The “traditional” caganer is in the likeness of a Catalan peasant farmer.
But throughout the years, Caganers have been made to look like everyone from political figures to celebrities to world leaders to sports gods to religious icons. Trump, Biden, Obama, Clinton … not even American politicians are safe. Democrat or Republican, it doesn’t matter. Everyone is fair game to get a Caganer pooping figure made in their likeness.
I first learned about them when we traveled to Barcelona during Christmastime. These pooper caganers were sold in every local market within sight. We couldn’t believe it.
